Sustainability

Conscious creation is an exotic journey.

MATERIALS

Fashion is a dirty business and - no matter what some crazies might say - we are pretty sure climate change is real. Although there’s no easy fix without deep change in our consumerism patterns, this much seems to us as a no-brainer: sustainable textiles and responsible manufacturing are the only way to go and should be considered as a requirement, both by brands and customers.

Every single EONA piece is cut from infinitely recyclable fabric that uses Aquafil’s innovative ECONYL®, which consists of 100% regenerated nylon made in a closed-loop process from plastic waste found in oceans and landfills around the world. This includes our printed and textured fabrics. Lining makes up about 45% of swimwear fabric consumption and is often overlooked. Our linings are composed of polyester made from post consumer recycled polymers in order to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills.

Fabric composition is associated to each product, under 'About Me'.

For this first collection, we are happy to feel like clasps are the only element we could not find a better alternative to. Hopefully, this is something we will figure out, soon.

 MANUFACTURING

We are committed to ethical practices, striving to minimize the negative impacts associated with manufacturing, including:

 - Growing the range of our ‘Made in Portugal’ components, in order to reduce our footprint. Currently, all manufacturing of our final product is local, meaning that your goodies are cut, sewn and printed in a radius of about 5km. We are working towards making this true for all – or at least most of – the bits and bobs involved in the process of making your swimwear. We hope that with the awareness created by our end consumer, our well-known textile industry reads the emergence of small, eco-led brands – like EONA – as their cue to incentivize the exploration and development of new technologies that will help close the loop and allow for kinder fashion. Be part of the change!

 - Using local digital printers to materialize our custom-designed patterns. Not only does this process reduce water usage and waste when compared with traditional, large-scale industrial dyeing methods, but it also means that we are only printing enough for each order, therefore avoiding seasonal leftovers and the accumulation of deadstock fabrics.

- Ensuring that all people involved in the production of your garments are treated fairly and respectfully along the way. We ensure ethical and fair compliance regarding child labour, forced or compulsory labour, health and safety, working hours and remuneration. This is the beauty of small businesses: we can keep track of everything!

THE WHOLE PACKAGE

When it comes to sustainability, the outside matters just as much as the inside. We use organic, recycled, biodegradable and compostable packaging throughout our supply chain.

Our bags are made from organic cotton and can be used to carefully store your garments, ensuring you can cherish them for longer. They can also be repurposed; we look forward to seeing your creativity emerge!

Our mailers are easily biodegradable and compostable. Unlike regular plastic bags, which can take up to 1000 years to break down, these can be gone in 3-6 months and help to reduce our environmental impact.

All of our mail is shipped carbon neutral, supporting projects such as forests' preservation.

Although we really (really!) appreciate you choosing to shop consciously with us, we don't send any extra branded material along with your order, so as to help eliminate single-use waste. Unboxing is a cool experience, but our planet deserves better.
